UMC of Geneva Post High School Scholarship

UMCG Scholarships are awarded to students continuing their education beyond high school.  Scholarship applications will be available online beginning Monday, February 6, 2012 and must be submitted with all supporting documents no later than April 9, 2012.

Factors considered in awarding scholarships are church membership & participation, school, church & community activities, academic record, financial need and work experience.  Applicants will be considered for all eligible scholarships.

The UMCG Scholarship Committee awards the following scholarships:

Bob Tucker Undergraduate Scholarship: one award in the amount of $2000 for a college undergraduate in any major.

Bob Tucker Graduate Scholarship: one award in the amount of $2000 for a graduate student in any major.

United Methodist Church of Geneva Scholarship: awards for a college undergraduate or community college, trade or vocational school student in any major.

Karen J. Weckler Memorial Scholarship: one award in the amount of $1500, payable in two installments. See specific criteria below. This scholarship is in memory of Karen J. Weckler and her work at the United MethodistChurchofGenevaand the Tri-Cities area. Criteria to earn this award is as follows:

  • The candidate must have a 3.0 or higher GPA by the end of the junior year.
  • Preference will be given to candidates with stronger financial need.
  • The candidate must be active in at least two (2) extra-curricular activities including sports or UMCG outreach programs.
  • The candidate must plan to major in elementary education (K-8).
  • The candidate must have been confirmed by a Christian church.
  • The candidate must actively participate in two (2) UMCG or Geneva community outreach programs with a combined total of 20 hours of volunteer service from 2 of the following programs; Lazarus House; Hesed House, UMCG Sunday School, Food Pantry, Women’s Rummage Sale; Swedish Day Food Booth or other similar activities. (Hours may be completed after the awarding of the scholarship but before the payout of scholarship funds).
  • The candidate must attend a state college or university in Illinois.
  • The candidate must be a graduate from a Batavia, Geneva or St. Charles public school.

       The $1500 Scholarship is to be paid directly to any state college or university in the State of Illinois upon verification of completion of the Scholarship Criteria listed above. In the event any of the listed church programs are discontinued, the donor may revise the list or provide a substitute program.

       We hope the establishment of this Memorial Scholarship Fund will in some way encourage students to embrace many of Christian Values and interest in Community Service that was such a large part of Karen’s life.

Applications and all supporting documents are to be submitted no later than April 9, 2012. Applications will not be accepted after this date.
